Evaluating Buck Maturity
In the heat of the moment, it can be difficult to judge a buck’s maturity when you might only have a few seconds to look. A good rule of thumb to abide by is looking for a buck with an antler spread to the tips of its ears, which along with decent mass and good tine length should put the buck at least 120" or better. This may help you in the field when considering whether buck is a worthy shooter and the minimum caliber of buck, we encourage our hunters to harvest. As spread widens beyond the ear tips, tines lengthen, and bulkier body mass becomes more expansive, you are beginning to see the characteristics of a very mature buck in the 4.5 year to 5.5 year old category. In addition, fully mature whitetail bucks in our area, often appear more fully muscled with broad thick shoulders and have a sagging back and belly.
